Accommodation in Kalmatia Sangam

Almora- a small town in Kumaon district in Uttarakhand is a scenic destination in the foothills of Himalayas. Bedroom, Eagle's Nest Cottage 
If you are coming with a family of four or in a large group, Eagle’s Nest would be the most suitable for your requirement. It is a duplex cottage with a sitting room and a large bedroom. A separate sleeping area is provided for the children. If you have a larger group you can always ask for extra bedding. This cottage is named after various types of eagles which are native to this region.

Another species of bird which frequent this region is Himalayan Magpie. Our octagonal cottage constructed out of stone is named after this bird species. This is one of our small cottages built for a newlywed couple or a small family.

The next cottage is named after a common variety of bird which is found in this region called Himalayan Cuckoo. It has more space and the bedroom is quite spacious to accommodate a family of four. There is a separate living area too. The bedroom is attached to a large sun terrace which gives you a spectacular view of the mountains.

The next cottage is called Hoopoe which is another common bird species found here. It is situated below Cuckoo and is also quite spacious to accommodate a family with children. It has a bedroom with double bedding and a small sitting area. Extra bedding can be provided if you ask for it.

Sitting Area, Scarlet Minivet Cottage 
Two common varieties of birds in this region are Pheasant and Patridge. Two of our cottages are names after these. They are built with two level accommodations with a view to accommodate bigger groups or family. They have balconies with mountain view.

Our more compact cottage is called Owl which is a common species in this area. This cottage is set on a lower level nearer to the reception. This is ideal for elderly or a single person. This cottage provides twin bedding and a small sitting area. There is a veranda with sitting arrangement.

Scarlet Minivet is a tropical bird with a black and scarlet body. Our next cottage is named after this bird species. The stone cottage bearing the name of this bird is similarly built like owl.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is set in the deep forest, 33 Km from Almora. It is a home for many birds, out of which number of them are migratory. The sanctuary is also meant to conserve and protect the broad leaf Oak forest which is an endangered species. There are about 200 species of bird found in this region like Laughing Thrush, Forktail, Nuthatches, Blackbirds, Parakeets, Monal, types of Pheasant, Magpies, and Woodpeckers etc.

Situated on the slopes of the mountain Binsar Sanctuary has Rhododendron and Oak forest at the higher level and a vast expanse of Pine forest at the lower level. These village houses are modified to suit our guest’s comfort without compromising the essence of the original construction. The village houses that are built for the guests are made in traditional way using wood, slate and stone. They have thatched tiled roofs and the interior is painted with mud and lime. This helps to keep the rooms warm in winters and cool in summers. The bathrooms are not attached to the main house as it was built similarly in the traditional way but each is provided with western toilet, fresh towels and organic soaps which are locally produced. Instead of hot shower you are provided with a hot bucket of water for your bath.

The village houses are often located at a height and are surrounded by oak, pine and rhododendron trees.  After a day’s walk through the terraced fields and green forests you will truly enjoy the enchanting views from the veranda outside your village house. You can have a cup of tea while admiring the view in this peaceful environment. At night you will be served tasty local cuisine by our local chef. The vegetables are locally grown at the backyard which is used to produce these meals. As for water, you will be served mineral water.

Papad ki sabji is made with colocacia leaves combined with spices and chick pea flour. Jhloli/Bhaat is also made with chick pea flour mixed with curd with pieces of radish cooked in the gravy.

Chitai Bell Temple

 Kasar Devi Temple
The walk to Chitai Bell temple will take you through beautiful green vegetation of fur and pine forests. It is the temple of Golu Devta, the God of justice. People who come here can make a wish by writing on stamp paper or letters to the God. Once their wish is fulfilled a brass bell is hung as an offering for the fulfillment of the wish of the devotee. This temple is characterized by thousands of brass bells hanging on its premises.
The other temple which is within easy reach of the resort is the Kasar Devi temple. It is one of oldest temple here dating back to 2nd century. The deity who is worshiped here is Kasar Devi. This temple is situated at the gateway of Kasar village and approach to the temple is a walk through Deodar and Pine forest. The area affords us a view of the majestic peaks of the Himalayas too.

Jageshwar Temples
Jageshwar temples are not very far from the resort and can be visited easily. This actually is a cluster of 150 temples built between 8th and 16th century. The temples are magnificent and have beautiful carvings. The most important among the 150 are Mritunjaya and Jyotirlinga.  The Dandeshwar temple complex is also nearby for you to visit.


Another temple which is worth visiting is Katarmal Sun temple. This temple is around 800 years old. It is built in such a way that the first rays of the sun falls on the shiva lingam within the temple. The temple is made of stone with pillars with beautiful carvings on them. There are 45 small temples surrounding the main temple.

After a long walk through the villages during the day, this is where you can relax and spend the night. You can freshen up with a hot bath from a bucket of water with aromatic organic soap and clean fluffy towels.

The walk itself is an unforgettable experience where you get to see the tradition followed by the people of this region. Each day we strive to show you a different village, mingle with the people there, accept their hospitality and eat sumptuous Kumaoni meals cooked right in front of you.

Part of this walks leads to a greater height where some of the villages are located. The height allows the guests to experience the magnificent view of the green valley below and the mountain tops at a distance. You can sit in the stone courtyard of your village house and watch the sun set over the grand peaks of Nandadevi. With a warm drink and refreshment this is a blissful experience.


The best time to visit Kumaon region for village trek is from mid-September to mid-April. This period is blessed with absolute clear sky, crisp weather and variety of fauna unique to this region.

Home Away From Home - Kalmatia Sangam Cottages

The scenic region of Almora in Kumaon district in Uttarakhand boasts of some truly amazing hotels and resorts. Being comfortable and reasonable they encourage the guests to relax and mingle with the nature. Kalmatia Sangam is one such boutique resort. This Himalyan resort is 7km away from Almora and is perched on a lush green hilltop.

Eagle's Nest Cottage
We offer cottages for the guests to stay in, which are named after birds as this region is the home of many exotic bird species as well as numerous migratory ones. The largest among the cottages is Eagle’s Nest which can accommodate a whole family of children or a group of bachelors. Incidentally various types of Eagles can be spotted in this area and it sets an apt description of the cottage. It is a duplex with sitting room downstairs and bedroom and washroom upstairs. There is separate sleeping space for children.

Himalayan Magpie
The octagonal stone structured cottage, Himalyan Magpie, acquires its name from another bird which frequents this region. This is built for a smaller family or a couple. It faces the mountain with a spectacular view.

Himalyan Cuckoo is a common variety which is found in this region from which the next cottage gets its name. It too has a spacious living area which can accommodate a family of four. Its large bedroom opens out to a huge sun terrace with a magnificent mountain view.

A common species of bird seen around this Himalyan resort is Hoopoe with its feather crested crown and long tapering bill.  The cottage below Cuckoo takes its name from this one, Hoopoe. Mountain facing this cottage too accommodates a small sitting area with a spacious bedroom. It can easily accommodate a family of four.

Partridge Cottage
Pheasant and Partridge, two well-known bird species lend their names to the next two cottages. They have long balcony with mountain view. These also have two level accommodation ideal for a large family or a group. 

Owl, the snug compact cottage with twin beds, sitting area and a veranda with sitting arrangement is the best for elderly or solo travelers.

The next cottage, Scarlet Minivet is a fairytale stone cottage. Scarlet Minivet is a small bird with black and scarlet body colors, also found in this Kumaon region. It is more or less designed similarly as Owl.
Each cottage is elegantly decorated and contains all modern amenities. Extra bedding is also available if required.

If the guests are looking for a relaxed fun filled stay it is best that they make it a little more than the weekend. With four days and three nights one gets to explore the surroundings as well as rest. The resort team takes the initiative to make the stay eventful.
